The 2009 Ford Escape ranks 4 out of 26 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 13 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Escape, and our analysis of reliability and safety data. Though the Escape was officially redesigned in 2008, upgrades for this year have changed its performance significantly. Auto reviewers, while disappointed in the 2008 model's driving dynamics, say the 2009 changes are for the better. Major upgrades include more power for the engines and a six-speed automatic transmission to replace the four-speed, as well as updated brakes and steering.
